Main Procedures of Friction Material Production:

The production process of friction materials is mainly divided into two stages: formulation screening and batch production. After receiving the order and clarifying the product performance requirements, first select the applicable formula, adjust the existing formula or develop a new formula. After testing, it can meet the user's requirements and put into mass production. The main aspects of the friction material production process include:

  1. Material inspection: Perform the necessary inspection on the raw materials to be used, and make necessary adjustments to the proportions in the formulation according to the characteristics of its physical and chemical indicators.
  2. Ingredients: The raw materials are metered according to the proportion determined by the formula. At present, there are two methods of manual metering and automatic metering of computer automatic batching system, the latter being advanced and reliable.
  3. Mixing: Mix the prepared raw materials. Mixing can be divided into wet mixing and semi-dry mixing. Commonly used mixers are three-axis spiral type, two-axis type, plough type, etc., and the most commonly used plough type.
  4. Press forming: divided into one-step forming method and two-step forming method. The one-step forming method is to put the material into the mold and directly press-form it; the two-step method pre-compresses the raw material into a blank, and then presses it into a hot stamping die for hot pressing.
  5. Heat treatment: In order to save the hot pressing time and improve the working efficiency of the hot press, the chemical effects of the organic components such as resin in the friction material after hot press forming are not completely sufficient, so the heat treatment process should be further completed at a certain temperature. Commonly used equipment is a heat treatment box that can be programmed to stabilize.
  6. Shape processing: the necessary trimming of the appearance of the product, such as grinding surface, chamfering, painting, accessories, printed trademarks, packaging and so on.

It is generally believed that the friction and wear characteristics of the friction material obtained through the above process have been determined, and the subsequent processing can change the appearance without changing the performance. However, a process called "surface ablation treatment" contributes to the stability of the initial performance of the friction material. The so-called ablation treatment is to burn the surface of the friction material at a high temperature of 600-700 °C before leaving the factory to rapidly decompose and vaporize the surface organic matter, and prevent thermal decay and air cushion at the initial stage of braking. Generally ablated surface depth is 1-2mm.
